The Football League Championship

The Football League Championship/Coca-Cola Football League Championship (Championship for short) is the highest division of The Football League and second-highest division in the English football league system after the Premier League.

The Football League Championship is notable in several respects. Not only is it the fifth most popular football league in Europe in terms of crowd attendance, but it is also the richest second division in world football. The league’s strong following is based on the fact that it draws heavily on local talent, and is generally a more open competition than the Premier League.

This League, first introduced in the 2004-2005 season, has its origins in the Football League First Division which was the highest division of English football overall for over 100 years between 1888 and 1992 until the en masse departure of 22 First Division teams in 1992 to form the Premier League.

Football League Championship Format

The Football League Championship boasts 4 more teams than the Premier League for a total of 24 teams. Each team plays against every other team twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 46 games. Three points are awarded for a win, and one for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss.

Teams are ranked in the league according to points gained, then goal difference, and then goals scored. In the event that two or more teams finish the season equal in all these respects, teams are separated by alphabetical order, unless a promotion, relegation, or play-off place is at stake in which case the decision is made based on a playoff game.

The top two teams are promoted to the Premier League, to be replaced by the bottom three teams of the Premier League, while the bottom three teams of the Football League are relegated to Football League One.

The teams finishing in positions 3-6 compete in the Football League Championship Play-Offs, a knock-out competition whose winner is also promoted to the Premier League.

In the playoffs, the third placed team plays against the sixth-placed team and the fourth placed team plays against the fifth placed team in two-legged semi-finals. The winners of each semifinal then compete in a single match with the prize being promotion to the Premier League and the Championship playoff trophy.
