The Premier League

The Premier League, or Premiership, is England’s primary football competition and the world’s most lucrative football league, with an expected revenue of £1.8 billion for the 2007-08 season, largely from media revenues. Promoted as “The Greatest Show On Earth”, the Premier League is the world’s most popular and most watched sporting league, with a worldwide following of an estimated half a billion people in over 200 countries.

This league was formed on 20 February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from The Football League en masse to take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal.

Premier League Structure

The Premiership is contested by 20 clubs and operates using a system of promotion and relegation. The season runs from August to May, with each team playing a total of 38 games; each team plays the others twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents. Winning teams receive three points and teams that draw receive one point. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal differences, and then goals scored. The club with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion.

The three lowest placed teams are relegated into the Football League Championship and the top two teams from the Championship, together with the winner of play-offs involving the third to sixth placed Championship clubs, are promoted in their place. Although a total of 42 clubs have competed in the Premier League, only four have won the title: Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, and Chelsea.

As of the 2009 season, the top three teams enter the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League at the group stage, and the fourth-placed team enters the third qualifying round for non-champions.

The fifth placed team automatically qualifies for the UEFA Cup, and the sixth and seventh placed teams, depending on what happens in the two domestic cup competitions, can also qualify.

The Premier League was recently promoted to the top of the UEFA rankings of European leagues based on their performances in European competitions over a five-year period thereby breaking the eight-year dominance of the Spanish league, La Liga.
